Retreat Route
On November 20, 1776, the British Army crossed the Hudson River and landed at the base of the Palisades Cliffs just south of the Kearney House. This sparked a retreat by Washington’s Continental Army beginning in Fort Lee and moving west through the current towns of Leonia, Englewood, Teaneck, New Milford, and River Edge to Hackensack. The troops spend their last night in Bergen County in Hackensack. This successful retreat continued through New Jersey and ultimately ended at the Battle of Trenton and Princeton in December 1776 and January 1777, respectively. Both battles were American victories.
