Oakland Historical Society-July 2026-The Declaration and New Jersey

July Open House — The Declaration and New Jersey

Location: Hendrik Van Allen House, 3 Franklin Avenue, Oakland, NJ 07436
Time: 1:00pm
Description: This July, we have two reasons to celebrate!

July 14 marks the 249th anniversary of General George Washington’s visit to the Van Allen House, when the home served as headquarters of the Continental Army for the day, hosting Washington, his officers, and aides during the Revolutionary War.

This year, we’ll also be celebrating America250 with a special afternoon of history, demonstrations, and family fun, featuring:
• A display of colonial-era arms, military equipment, currency, and other Revolutionary-era artifacts
• A special live reading of the Declaration of Independence
• A blacksmithing demonstration*
• An exhibit showcasing artifacts from Independence Day celebrations of years past
• A special pop-up exhibit, “The Declaration in New Jersey,” exploring how New Jersey became the first colony to formally support independence and what that decision meant for its citizens
• Lawn games and family activities*

*Some activities are weather permitting.

Gather your family, invite your friends, and spend a summer afternoon making memories at one of Oakland’s most treasured historic landmarks.
